Massasoit Student Marybeth Banks is One of 50 Students in America to Receive the Prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Award

    Last updated 8 days ago

The Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship makes it possible for the nation’s top community college students to complete their bachelor’s degrees by transferring to a four-year college or university. One of the most generous and competitive programs of its kind- the Foundation provides up to $30,000 per year to 50 deserving students selected annually, making it the largest private scholarship for two-year and community college transfer students in the country. Massasoit Community College student Marybeth Banks is one of them.

Marybeth is a survivor of domestic abuse. After sustaining major injuries, as a result of the abuse, and enduring physical and emotional pain, her parents stepped in with an offer that turned out to transform her life. “My parents offered to pay for me to take a class at Massasoit Community College as my Christmas present. Although I had no confidence in my intellectual abilities, I decided to accept my parents’ generous gift,” she tells us. After the course ended, she had earned an A and her confidence soared. She enrolled in more classes and was recommended to enter the Honors Program, continuing to strive in all her coursework. Marybeth will attend Wellesley College in the fall.

“My gratitude is that I was fortunate enough to discover my own inner strength. Every person faces difficulties in life, but not everyone can see the validity of those struggles. I have overcome my own self-doubt; I have flourished in a time of turmoil; I have stared death in the face twice, and am still alive to tell the tale,” said Marybeth.

Marybeth has maintained a 3.9 average at Massasoit Community College and is a peer tutor in the Academic Resource Center on campus. She is also a Writing Fellow in a pilot Writing Fellows program. She is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and the Massasoit Honors Program.

Marybeth’s nomination for the award was a team effort by Sharyn McCaughey, Counselor in the Advisement & Counseling Center and Kerryn Snyder, Coordinator of the Academic Resource Center Math Services. “Marybeth is an exemplary student role model, she has impressed many students with her patience and concern for their academic success. She is very well poised and handles situations which would be considered challenging by most tutors with sound judgment, respect, and grace. Many of the tutors value her opinion and consult with her on issues that have arisen in their tutoring sessions,” said Kerryn.

“Marybeth Banks represents the best of the best here at Massasoit Community College. She is a resilient, determined, high achieving student who deserves the chance to pursue her academic dreams,” states Dr. Charles Wall, President of Massasoit Community College.

Massasoit Community College will hold an Open House to celebrate the new Veteran's Center on Monday, May 7, 2012 from 2 to 4 p.m. The event will take place on the Student Center Room SC181 on the Brockton Campus.

The Veteran's Center is designed to meet the growing needs of military members, veterans, and their families. Centrally located in the Student Center on the Brockton campus, it is a place where military students can go to for assistance with educational benefits, college related issues, and a comfortable place relax , study, and socialize with other military students. There are computer workstations for class assignments and research, a lounge, and a multimedia conference table for laptops and studying.

“We are very pleased to be able to provide this opportunity to those who have served; it has been an initiative in the planning for several years and the entire college community is excited to see it come to fruition,” said Dr. Charles Wall, President of Massasoit Community College.

The new Veterans Counselor, Michael Siegel has eighteen years of military experience, including a year in Afghanistan.  Michael has served in the Connecticut and Massachusetts Army National Guard and was the veteran’s coordinator at Norwalk Community College in Connecticut before coming to Massasoit. As a veteran himself, he is familiar with the military culture that affects this particular student population.

“Having served myself, it is my honor to support military students and to be able to take this role to give back and assist my fellow service members,” Michael said. “I was deployed while in college so I understand the difficulties and the unique hardships of proudly serving my country while pursuing my educational goals,” he added.

The Center is located in Brockton but Michael will be assisting all military students whether they attend at the Brockton, Canton or Middleborough campuses.

    New Water Bottle Filling Stations

    Last updated 23 days ago

As part of our sustainability efforts, Massasoit has just installed two new water bottle filling stations – one near the Registrar’s Office on the upper floor of the Administration Building and one next to the vending machine in the cafeteria.

Fill your reusable bottles for free with clean, safe, filtered water at either of these locations. The stations feature touch-free, motion sensor operation, and they keep count of the number of plastic water bottles saved with each use.

The Sustainability Task Force will be selling reusable, stainless steel bottles today at our Sustainability Showcase from 11:00 to 1:00 in the Upper Student Lounge. The documentary "Tapped", about the bottled water industry, will be shown in the Louison Board Room at 10:00, 12:00, and 2:00.

Please join us and come learn about this and Massasoit’s other sustainability initiatives!
